Health Insurance Premium Costs High for Employers and Employees

Kansas City, Kan. (PRWEB) September 24, 2008 -- Despite lower premium increases, employers and employees continue to see high health insurance costs. The 2008 Compensation Data (https://www.compdatasurveys.com/Products/?id=1) survey results found that 67.3 percent of organizations spend over $9,600 annually to cover an employee and their family. At nearly half of the organizations surveyed, employees pay over $3,000 a year to do the same.

The cost of health insurance continues to be high for employers with most spending 10 percent of payroll on medical coverage. On employee only plans, the majority of employers pay between $201 and $400 per month. Those offering employee plus spouse or employee and children plans typically spend between $401 and $600 a month. Comparatively, nearly 70 percent spend over $800 monthly on employee plus family plans.

?Health insurance costs for employers continue to rise, particularly on employee plus family plans,? said Amy Kaminski, manager of marketing programs at Compdata Surveys. ?In 2006, nearly 80 percent of employers paid over $450 per family. Now, 90.5 percent spend over $400 on family plans, and of those, 67.3 percent spend more than $800. ?

Premium costs remain high for employees, as well. For individuals who choose employee only coverage, over 40 percent pay $26 to $75 per month. However, nearly half of employees pay over $250 a month to provide health insurance coverage for their family. This means an employee earning $30,000 could spend 10 percent of his or her salary to provide family health insurance coverage.
